  9. Super 8 review

    Genre: Sci-fi, Thriller, Mystery
    Director: J.J Abrams
    Producer: Steven Spielberg
Cast: Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler
    Rating: 7.4/10
    Release Date: 5 August 2011

Super 8 is been produced by Steven Spielberg, who has produced and directed many other blockbuster movies such as E.T, Twilight Zone-The Movie, The Adventures of Tintin etc. It has been stated that “Spielberg's early science-fiction and adventure films were seen as an archetype of modern Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking” this awards with huge advantage to Super8’s success and a blockbuster hit. Spielberg’s movies mostly involve children of young age or teenagers for example Super8, The Adventures of Tintin, The Goonies or E.T which attracts a majority of young audiences. He produces big budget films which are recognizable from the content in the film like Technical equipments and explosions-Super8’s budget was $50 million and it grossed box office price of $259, 215,501. Super 8 is paying homage to Steven Spielberg and his success by making a sci-fi/ thriller movie (Spielberg’s specialty).

Super 8 is based in Ohio, 1979. Joe and his friends are making a zombie movie where they plan to set a scene at a train station. They witness a disastrous and tragic train crash where the train collides with car ahead and produces devastating destruction. The non-diegetic sound of the crash is nerve-racking and dramatic; it keeps us in that position for a while as the train crash scene continues. This gets recorded on the camera which is then later viewed by the group. Later in the movie, there are sequences where people are starting to disappear and Deputy is attempting to solve the unexplained mysteries in town.

The use of advanced and innovative technology (Alien) in Super 8 is pretty typical in Spielberg’s sci-fi movies and is targeting a young audience to keep them entertained and also provide them with experiences of beyond a real world and astonish them with shocking and dramatic special effects. Super 8 not only provide audiences with exploration of another world beyond the real world but also identify and feel connected towards the emotional bond and attachment; Joe has to deal with his mother’s death as well as forming the same relationship with his father (a Deputy Police Officer) or Alice and her father relationship or even friendship between Joe and Charles. Non-diegetic music is effective in connecting the audience when emotional scenes approach and heavy and dramatic background music when there are scenes involving destruction. Super 8 is move where you get to see many emotions (while being a typical sci-fi movie) whether that is of characters or the audiences.
In my own opinion, I really enjoyed the film as it involved special effects and the use of innovative ideas to form the Alien. The use of an emotional touch in the film keeps the audience connected even if they feel uninterested because they somehow identify with the situation between characters. The non-diegetic sound has made it extremely dramatic and enhanced the situation they are in. I particularly like the ending where Joe’s locket (containing a picture of him and his mother) is attracting towards the tower; I think it is a good way of ending it by giving it a little emotional touch.
