On Wednesday 17-01-07, 12D1 need to do the following during your three lessons...
A. Freshie Idol Analysis
Follow this link to view the new version of 'Freshie Idol' (produced by Hasnaa, Jalna and Jasmit in association with Channel 4) that appeared on T4's 'Homemade' on Saturday. Watch it a couple of times and then carry out an analysis of it using the MC CAT Practical Production assessment focii that you yourselves will be judged on when you complete your short films (write one short paragraph on each)...

- Media Language (comment on cinematography, sound, mise-en-scene, editing, etc.)
- Conventions (how does the production make use of reality TV and trailer conventions?)
- Creativity (in what ways is this creative or original?)
- Attention to Detail (consider the little factors that make this appear authentic or not)
- Technical Proficiency (camerawork, editing, post-production sound & graphics etc.)
You'll obviously need to do this in the library or Post-16 centre, after you've registered in the classroom. Post up your finished response at the end of this (as a comment). Make sure you include your name at the end and DO NOT copy what other people have written!
B. Research for Practical Productions
Each person in the group needs to find three texts that are in some way similar to your production idea - either because they cover the same topic, or because they are the same genre/type of text (eg film trailer, reflexive documentary, etc). The best places to look are YouTube, Google Video or on some of the other sites listed in the Macguffin del.ici.ous video bookmarks. You then need to post up a link to each clip on your group blog (or, better still, embed the clip in it...see if you can work out how).
For each clip or extract you then need to carry out some analysis that will help you with your own production. Answer the following questions...
1. About the text...

1. About the text...
- What is the text? When was it produced? Who produced/directed it?
- Who is the target audience? How do you know?
- Where would you usually expect to see this text? What channel? Time? etc.
2. Different features it has...
- What is distinctive about its camerawork, editing, sound, mise-en-scene, etc.?
- What typical conventions of its genre does it use?
- What elements could you appropriate (borrow) for your production?
Obviously, this requires you to have set up your group blog. If that hasn't been done then that has to be the priority. Don't forget the other cover work that was set for you on Monday: the group blog and the self-evaluation.
All of this work must be completed in full by next Monday 22-01-07, when I will be in the lesson, so finish anything that you don't complete for homework.

* Media Language...
it can be seen from the following that "Freshie idol"has made media language their first priority...
MiSe-eN-sCeNe: setting of the production was chosen well as it is appropriate for "freshie idol" as southal is known to be the place full of freshies, this freshiness is shown through the way the people sing!
CoStUmE, HaIr & MaKeUp: we can see the group wearing normal, day to day clothing with natural make up whereas the people in southall are shown as "fresh" with their clothes and style emphasizing on the whole "fresh" look!
SoUnD: the use of parallel, non-diegetic & diagetic sound is used well ans the voice over in a "fresh" accent also emphasizes the whole "freshie idol" theme!
Cinematography & editing: it is simple, due to short, simple cuts which adds more impact to this..use of medium shots aswell!
* Conventions...
good use of normal conventions, especially the conventions from programmes like "pop idol", for example the judges and the humour used (slapping, acents) and commenting on the people "there was no freshiness in there what so ever"...the conventions of a trailer is also used in this for example the short, persuasive techniques, just like a trailer should be!
* Creativity...
its an original idea as the topic of "freshie idol" has never come across on television before!
* Attention to Detail...
authenticity is shown through things like hand held cameras, the voiceover and the original topic itself!
* Technical Proficiency...
the use of indian music which targets its primary audience of the asian society along with the use of captions and colours to attract the attention of its audience!
BaSrAn xXx
the setting of the production was a good idea as southall is full of freshies that imagrated from india not so long ago, and they own cd stalls in broadway so they got good knowledge of freshie songs
All the people in the video are freshie so they are all dressed as freshies in their normal everyday clothes, they are wearing old fashion shirts and the ladys are wearing traditional indian suits probebly sent down from india.
They have a person doing the sound of a freshie lady which goes along with the freshie theme and they uses all bhangra music that freshies would go crazy over.
freshies havent been shown on tv before so its different

Freshie Idol
Media Language:
During the introduction of the trailer, Freshie idol, many shots were used to make the meaning clearer.
We saw medium shots, of the actors, so this way we saw what they were wearing and what they were doing clearly.
Long shots were also shown, so that we could see the judges all together, this was at two times on the trailer once when they were together in the cd store and another when they were seated in the room.
Notice how there were small sharp cuts, so that they could stick with the conventions of an actual film trailer.
A voiceover was used, and was said in a ‘Freshie’ tone, this created humour, but importantly fitted with the sequence it was used for.
The sound was parallel and non-diegetic which gave Freshie idol the authenticity it needed to make it look real.
Conventions:
‘Freshie Idol’ used real conventions, which we would usually see in a TV realty show. The fact that they showed the contestants, who sang, put across that it was a real event actually happening. These people were auditioning tow in ‘Freshie idol’ and similarly in reality shows like ‘x factor’ people will also audition for a place. The trailer followed the fact that sometimes judges can agree (this is shown in one scene when they were all hugging) and how they can also disagree (this was shown when they were slapping each other).
Creativity:
The trailer came across as real and was shown as if there was really a show ‘Freshie idol’ which we should look out for. This means that because it is like a copied version of an actually show and the only difference is this one will be to find the best ‘Freshie’; the show is actually based on reality.
Attention to Detail:
The trailer has a sense of authenticity and looks very real.
Shaky shots, voiceovers and interviews have been used, as these are real conventions to make it look real. The fact that we could see the shots of Southall Broadway shows that the trailer is definitely based around the location.
Technical Proficiency:
There are many shots, which have been used; these include close-ups, medium shots and long shots. A close up shot was used when a Freshie was shown singing; medium shots were used when we saw the judges and long shots were used when we saw the Freshie’s and judges together. The camera work matched well with the voice over and sound.
zara
Media language
A lot of straight angle shots and medium shots where used in the trailer.
There were a few long shots used on the judges, so we can see all judges together as a group.
The location were it was set in was Southall Broadway, this setting fitted with the theme of freshie idol.
The sound was diegetic and non-diegtic sounds, which is also parallel to the scene.
Conventions
The conventions used are reality TV; this is showed when the judges give their comments and disagreements to the singers. Also footage of the contestants singing.
Creativity
The creativity of freshie idol is very original and exclusive.
Attention To Detail
Hand held camera movements, which show original an effect also voice over and music, which shows ethnicity.
Technical Proficiency
The camerawork and editing is professional done. alot of cutz were used which created alot of effect on the trailer.
